Our Ranking Methodology
Last reviewed: August 2026. This methodology is reviewed and updated at least annually.
Our approach
Our ranking methodology applies to every firm we assess, in every market we cover. The same four-stage process, the same six criteria, and the same peer-review safeguards apply worldwide. Rankings are editorially independent of any commercial relationship with Expert Lawyer Guide.
Rankings are independently assessed. No firm can pay to improve its position.
How rankings are compiled
- Peer nomination and review — Practising lawyers are invited to confidentially rate peers they have worked with, referred to, or opposed. Voters cannot rate themselves or their own firm.
- Client feedback — Verified reviews from clients who have engaged the practitioner, checked for authenticity before publication.
- Independent desk research — Public record checks including admission status, disciplinary history with the relevant regulator, and publicly available case or tribunal outcomes.
- Editorial review — Our editorial lead resolves close calls and checks consistency across practice areas.
Ranking criteria
Professional standing and credentials
Current, unrestricted admission to practice; disciplinary history with the relevant regulator; years admitted and practising in the nominated area.
Depth of experience and specialisation
Complexity and seniority of matters typically handled; breadth versus specialisation relative to the practice area norm.
Peer recognition
Peer views from practitioners in the same field and region.
Client feedback and service quality
Verified client reviews, responsiveness, communication, and fee transparency.
Verifiable case outcomes
Publicly available judgments, tribunal decisions, or independently confirmed outcomes; self-reported statistics are not published as fact.
Contribution to the profession
Publications, teaching, mentoring, law reform involvement, and pro bono contribution.
Recognition tiers
Practitioners may be recognised at one of four tiers: Distinguished, Leading, Recommended, and Rising Talent (for practitioners earlier in their career showing strong peer and client recognition).
Data sources and verification
Regulatory status is checked against the relevant state or territory law society public register. Case outcomes cited are drawn only from published judgments or tribunal decisions, linked to their public source.
Our editorial policy
Firms are assessed independently of any commercial relationship with Expert Lawyer Guide. A firm that pays for a premium listing profile receives additional profile features, not an improved ranking position. Our researchers do not have access to commercial data when conducting assessments.
Limitations of this methodology
This ranking is not a guarantee of outcome in any individual legal matter. Inclusion or ranking tier reflects the information available to us at the time of review. Practitioners who believe a listing is inaccurate can request a correction.
Corrections and disputes
Lawyers or firms who believe their listing contains an error can contact us at [email protected] for review. Corrections are assessed by the editorial team and, where warranted, made within 10 business days.
We welcome peer reviews
We invite practising lawyers across all fields to submit confidential peer reviews of colleagues, whether or not they or their firm currently appear on Expert Lawyer Guide. Peer reviews can be submitted to [email protected].
